Happy Independence Day

Happy Independence DayLike most other Americans, the Mutts are taking this weekend off to celebrate our freedom.  We'll not only celebrate our freedom, but the freedom we've given so many animals.  You should celebrate too...you've all helped liberate a dog from a kill shelter or puppy mill.

But the one time you do NOT let your dog run free is on Independence Day.  Did you know more dogs are lost on the 4th of July than any other day?  It's not surprising; picnics outside, family events with doors and fences left open, fireworks and noise...there are so many distractions.

Please pay special attention to the location of your pets and to their comfort and care on Independence day.  Here is a wonderful article on pets and the 4th of July, courtesy of the ASPCA.

Fourth of July Safety Tips

bulletNever leave alcoholic drinks unattended where pets can reach them. Alcoholic beverages have the potential to poison pets. If ingested, the animal could become very intoxicated and weak, severely depressed or could go into a coma. Death from respiratory failure is also a possibility in severe cases.

bulletDo not apply any sunscreen or insect repellent product to your pet that is not labeled specifically for use on animals. Ingestion of sunscreen products can result in drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst and lethargy. The misuse of insect repellent that contains DEET can lead to neurological problems.

bulletAlways keep matches and lighter fluid out of your pets’ reach. Certain types of matches contain chlorates, which could potentially damage blood cells and result in difficulty breathing—or even kidney disease in severe cases. Lighter fluid can be irritating to skin, and if ingested can produce gastrointestinal irritation and central nervous system depression. If lighter fluid is inhaled, aspiration pneumonia and breathing problems could develop.

bulletKeep your pets on their normal diet. Any change, even for one meal, can give your pets severe indigestion and diarrhea. This is particularly true for older animals who have more delicate digestive systems and nutritional requirements. And keep in mind that foods such as onions, chocolate, coffee, avocado, grapes & raisins, salt and yeast dough can all be potentially toxic to companion animals.

bulletDo not put glow jewelry on your pets, or allow them to play with it. While the luminescent substance contained in these products is not highly toxic, excessive drooling and gastrointestinal irritation could still result from ingestions, and intestinal blockage could occur from swallowing large pieces of the plastic containers.

bulletKeep citronella candles, insect coils and oil products out of reach. Ingestions can produce stomach irritation and possibly even central nervous system depression. If inhaled, the oils could cause aspiration pneumonia in pets.

bulletNever use fireworks around pets! While exposure to lit fireworks can potentially result in severe burns and/or trauma to the face and paws of curious pets, even unused fireworks can pose a danger. Many types contain potentially toxic substances, including potassium nitrate, arsenic and other heavy metals.

bulletLoud, crowded fireworks displays are no fun for pets, so please resist the urge to take them to Independence Day festivities. Instead, keep your little guys safe from the noise in a quiet, sheltered and escape-proof area at home.

Amie

Amie is a rare Tibetan Spaniel with long silky black hair.  She is a sweet, sweet girl.  Always the lady, her hair even has brown highlights!

Everyone who meets Amie loves her.  She puts her tiny paw on your arm and asks to be loved.  She's a small 30 lbs., and a low energy dog, so she'd be great for townhomes and for those who'd just rather have a lap dog.

Amie is also great with kids!  She's the perfect dog for a grandma or grandpa.  Amie is waiting for her new home.  Come see just how sweet she is.  Her
adoption donation is $200.

Here's Johnny! We affectionately call him "JJ" for short.  He is the unique combination of the Pharaoh Hound with a long lean body and pointy ears, and the typical Border Collie, black/white coloring with the white tip tail.  He has that "eager to please, just love me" attitude on life.

JohnHenry

He enjoys a good game of chase with his canine siblings around the fenced back yard, but inside would rather plop down on a cushy doggie bed.  He is a sweet, gentle soul who gets along with everyone.  He loves his human foster family too, both young and old!  He is about 1 yr old and only 41 lbs, despite his tall, lean body.

His adoption donation is $200.00

Birdie is a female Boxer/Beagle mix between 2-3 yrs old.

Birdie is great with kids, loves to play. She's has an outgoing personality and wants to meet everyone.  Birdie is very affectionate, gets along with other dogs and is crate/potty trained.

She also walks well on a leash and is obedient when told to stay, stop, leave it or off.  She's past the chewing stage and is ready to play hide and seek with her new family!

Do you have the time to play hide and seek with Birdie?  If so, she's ready!  Her adoption donation is $200.
